A Year In Review
Objective: To
review some of the highlights of the past year at Marietta Memorial.
Marietta
Memorial Hospital is committed to being
the first place you choose to receive care and the first place in our area
people want to work. How is that achieved?
We believe it happens through steadfast work in six fundamental
areas. People, Service, Growth, Stewardship, Quality and Community
Benefit.
As we reflect back,
here are a few highlights of 2007.
People
Hiring
great people means investing a great deal of time and money each year in
salaries, benefits and training. At Marietta Memorial, we work to create a
culture where employees feel supported and empowered to do what’s
necessary to provide outstanding care.
This past year we embarked on a significant recruitment campaign to
bring talented staff in key support areas such as cardiac, therapy and the
ED.
This
past year our employees attended conferences, participated in ongoing
clinical medical education programs, receive new and updated
certifications, and have on-site support from our staff development
professionals. We invested
over $94,000 in training and education alone.
Rewarding,
recognizing and celebrating employees for good work has always been
important, but this year it became a larger focus of our managers’ core
responsibilities. In
addition, this year we implemented a wide variety of internal service
initiatives – frequent rounding by senior staff, personal thank you
notes to individual employees, a service trophy and merchandise
certificates –to celebrate staff accomplishments.
Teamwork
and camaraderie are another important component of our culture and several
times this year employees joined together for ice cream socials, community
volunteer opportunities, seasonal festivals and wellness activities. We
held our annual service banquet to honor the time and commitment of
long-term employees.
As
services grow and health care needs change, recruitment continues to be a
top priority. To help ensure an adequate supply of skilled professionals,
we work with area universities and community colleges, providing clinical
rotations for students studying to be doctors, nurses and allied health
professionals in radiology and imaging. This year we worked with 17
medical students and 46 nursing students. We continued to offer job
shadowing opportunities to high school and college students and summer
internship programs as well.
Additionally,
we continue to add physician and specialists to our well-respected medical
staff. The Memorial Health System is comprised of over 140 dedicated
medical staff members. Their clinical skills are outstanding; they care
immensely about their patients; and they are committed to serving the
needs of our community. Fourteen
new physicians joined the medical staff in the last 12 months, including:

Service
Our
hospital expanded its efforts and commitment to outstanding service with a
focus on creating a gratifying experience for all patients and customers.
We continue to monitor patient satisfaction via Press Ganey and CSI teams
develop new ideas and programs to support those efforts.
Growth
Our
community’s medical demands continue to grow as we work to bring care
right to our community. This year we began construction on the Strecker
Cancer Center expansion, and several areas saw remodeling.
The Wound Center moved to the old ED area and was joined by
Marietta Occupational Health Partners.
We
invested over $10 million in capital equipment to meet the technology
needs of our services, developed an orthopedic outreach clinic and
instituted the NaviCare patient flow system in surgery as examples.
Quality
Quality
is not just a buzzword at MMH. We continue to make this a top focus of all
we do. Led by our quality council we implemented several new initiatives,
including participation in the 100,000 and 1 million lives campaign.
Another example of our continued focus on patient safety was the
initiation of a red blanket/red slippers program, led by Division G.
Stewardship
Good
stewardship is critical in order to keep the confidence of our community
and to provide for the growth in capacity and services people want and
need. Our strong and improving financial performance is essential to our
continued ability to borrow money and provide employees and physicians the
tools and equipment necessary to do their jobs. As a not-for-profit
organization, all of the net income generated by our hospital is invested
back into the community. And the community can expect continued
stewardship of our scarce healthcare resources.
In the Community
The
results of our fourth Community Opinion Study showed perception of
Marietta Memorial as the best provider in the valley continues to grow. MMH
jumped another 3% as best provider in the valley while St. Josephs and
Camden Clark continue to see declines.
MMH perception as best provider continued to increase in
Williamstown, but saw a slight dip in Belpre. Awareness of the Marietta
Memorial Health Foundation and the work they do for the hospital showed a
slight increase as well.
At
Marietta Memorial, we take it upon ourselves to be leaders. We know
providing state-of-the-art healthcare isn’t unusual – it’s expected.
That’s why we strive to make a difference not only in the care we give
our patients and families, but by giving attention to needs in our own
community. This past year we
provided over $1 million in community benefit beyond the care we provided
day to day. Some ways we’ve done that this past year include:
81 Screenings
