Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Services of the Marietta Memorial Wound Care Center (WCC) is an outpatient clinic providing hyperbaric treatment services for non-emergent conditions. The service is provided primarily, but not limited to, as an adjunctive treatment for chronic wound care. The HBOT center is part of the Nursing Services Division and is located next to Marietta Occupational Health Partners on the first floor of the hospital.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is a treatment in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The treatment quickly delivers high concentrations of oxygen to the bloodstream, assists in the healing process of wounds and is effective in fighting certain types of infections. It also stimulates the growth of new blood vessels and improves circulation. A treatment profile is administered daily and the number of treatments received will depend on the diagnosis.

Patients are considered for hyperbaric treatment by a HBOT trained physician who will complete a history and physical, order diagnostic tests, and determine a plan of care using guidelines for approved conditions established by Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. Patients must be medically stable and free from acute invasive care (i.e. ventilators, cardiac monitoring, hemodynamic monitoring, intravenous therapy, etc.). Patients can be reconsidered for hyperbaric treatment when medical stability has been determined, considering technical limitations.

The clinical staff is qualified to perform their tasks by education, ongoing competency evaluation and completion of a recognized and accredited hyperbaric medicine training program as established by either the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society or the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine. Services provided in the HBOT include patient assessment, diagnostic testing, and provision of the hyperbaric treatment to include close monitoring and documentation. Evidenced based Clinical Practice Guidelines are used as guidelines for treatment.

Our mission at the HBOT clinic is to provide comprehensive and compassionate care that improves the health of the people that we serve.
