Marietta Memorial Hospital Recognizes Blood Donors
Marietta, OH (January 23, 2013)
Marietta Memorial Hospital’s Blood Bank is honoring individuals and businesses who have supported blood donation in the past two years. The dinner will be held Thursday, January 24, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the K of C Hall on Gilman Avenue in Marietta.
“We are so appreciative of those who donate or host our bloodmobile throughout the year,” says blood bank supervisor Shelly Baylor. “Even though 38 percent of the U.S. population can give blood, only about three percent actually roll up their sleeves and donate.”
The need for blood remains constant and Marietta Memorial Hospital runs one of only two independent blood banks in the state of Ohio. This means the blood we have donated gets processed and used, right here, from our own community. Blood donations save the lives of people in our community whether they are given during a medical crisis, surgical procedure, or to cancer patients who need the platelets (blood cells that prevent bleeding) as part of their treatment. Platelets have a shelf life of only five days, so the need for donors is year-round.
The hospital had 2,350 people donate blood in 2012. It collected 1,925 units of blood and transfused 4,418 blood products.
“The dinner is our way of saying thanks,” says Baylor, “Many of our donors are extremely dedicated to our hospital. We have businesses and organizations sign up to hold blood drives year after year because they want to support our local health care.”
Blood donations can be made by appointment by calling 740-374-1432 or by visiting the blood mobile at upcoming drives listed below. Dates and locations of blood mobiles are also listed on the hospital’s website at www.mmhospital.org/bloodmobile.
