Probably one of the most important responsibilities of the Strecker Cancer Center is providing the community and surrounding area with ongoing education and support -- education in the prevention and early detection of cancers and support such as the Evening Exchange and Pioneer Cancer Support groups, and in some cases, self-help groups.

Listed below is a sample of our ongoing commitment to prevention, detection, treatment and support of the community in the ongoing battle against cancer.

• Lifeline: A personal emergency response system provided through Marietta Memorial Hospital’s 55 Plus program.
• Reach to Recovery: Volunteers work with patients with beast cancer throughout the year on a regular “on call” basis.
• I Can Cope: Individual one-two hour programs for patients with cancer and their families. Topics include: Cancer & Cancer Treatment, Keeping Well in Mind and Body, Feelings & Relationships, Relieving Cancer Pain, and Taking Charge of Money Matters. This education program is co-sponsored by the Washington County Unit of the American Cancer Society and Marietta Memorial Hospital.
• Evening Exchange: A support group for patients with breast cancer that meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. The support group is loosely structured; programs usually include an educational aspect and provide a forum that allows participants the opportunity to help each other.
• Pioneer Cancer Support Group: Provides ongoing support and information on cancer-related issues. It is sponsored by the American Cancer Society, Marietta Memorial Hospital and Selby General Hospital.
• Bereavement Support Group: Open to the community for anyone who needs information and/or support in dealing with grief. This group meets on the third Thursday of each month.
